Things are ACTUALLY that bad. Of course, we (holistically) are significantly better than we were a few decades ago, but the generation of bad leaders hasn’t gone out yet. And neither has colionialism ended. When they say Ghana and Kenya and South Africa are leaders, that’s EXACTLY what they are - leaders. Of course, these news sources always over-exaggerate things and love to cause panic, but there are problems. My sister’s old college friend who’s a backpacker, went to Niger before he visited us in Ghana, and the contrast was even startling to him. Our work isn’t finished. Kraa.
I’m very very confused right now. I need help. How bad is the situation on the continent? Are people starving? Is there really a permanent hunger crises? I’m realising I’ve may have been blinded by seeing things from the Ghanaian perspective. Or it may just be western media meddling with the image out there. Not sure which.
Yesterday, I was in a chat organised by Rise Africa and the conversation some-way somehow drifted from African Art to the poor leadership, terrible governance, starving children, money-thirsty power-hungry bastards, ill-motived unconcerned west… But these were people who live in the diaspora so I thought it was just western influence. I felt like I new wassup; thinking that the continent was made of replicas of Ghana, Kenya and on the high end South Africa. Changing, growing, developing Africa.
But today, I was talking with this friend who works with a mining company in Niger and I asked him what it was like and he said it was very much undeveloped. Apparently its the poorest in the world and they’ve got a lot of gold, diamond and oil. I came home and read this article by some two charities talking of hunger in the Sahel Region. I can’t tell if its just a money-making scheme or its that bad. I’ll really use some clarity here. Perhaps I should travel around and see for myself. We need our own BBC or Al Jazeera.
I think there’s so much hope, but how do we keep it from dying out?
